Text in clothes is a huge trend in India for the past few years now. It started almost half a decade ago and is still going on here. I still remember around 2015 when a lot of t-shirts and sweatshirts had motivational/inspirational words and slogans written on them. Some of these clothing pieces also had entire paragraphs on them making them look ugly.
In the beginning, these men’s clothing pieces had words on them like Create, Believe, Victory, etc. After a couple of years around 2017, words turned into long texts or paragraphs. I would see sweatshirts with slogans and even entire paragraphs on them about life, working hard, etc.
What’s wrong with text in clothing?
-Basically everything. It makes your outfit look less attractive and immature – my personal opinion. Nobody would want to see and read an entire paragraph on someone’s t-shirt or sweatshirt. It’s fine when you wear clothes with phrases on them when there’s a campaign or awareness and maybe for gym but avoid them for casual outfits. When there are better alternates out there why would you go for something like this-
This trend is mostly followed by teens and young men. The brands that make these types of clothing pieces are always a youth-focused or they make fashion for the young guys too. Teenagers should avoid getting pieces like these and get minimal graphic or logo sweatshirts and t-shirts.
Even when going for text on clothes, keep it minimal like this black sweatshirt above, it says ‘Young and Reckless ‘ or something like ‘Real is Rare’, that one of my sweatshirts says. Keeping the text minimal in the t-shirt or sweatshirt will make your outfit look more appropriate and stylish than a 200-word paragraph written on it.
Avoid text only if it’s something about motivation, life, and similar topics. There are pieces with lots of text, like in the current H&M x Lee collection where some of the t-shirts and sweatshirts have texts that tell about the brand Lee and that is what you should go for if there has to be text on clothes.
